Deadline is reporting that actor J.R. Ramirez has agreed to play Ted Grant, who in the comics was both an ex-pro boxing champ and the super hero known as Wildcat (and whose son could actually turn into, well, a wildcat), in Season 3 of Arrow. As that article points out, he also helped train Black Canary in her early days, and since the report says Grant will “play a pivotal role in Laurel Lance’s arc” in Season 3, it could very well be that he’ll help make her strong enough fighter to eventually assume the Canary mantle from her sister.
Since the trailer for the upcoming season made it look like Oliver Queen wants his friend and confidant John Diggle out of the field, Grant could also play a more active role in taking down criminals. As we saw in the Season 2 finale, being the Arrow isn’t necessarily a solo gig when things get bad, and even with Roy Harper graduating to become Arsenal, another masked man on the side of the good guys is always welcome.
One thing viewers probably won’t see? That Wildcat costume from the comics that features the cat-head mask. The producers would end up spending too much time reassuring folks that no animals were harmed in the making of that one.
Arrow returns with new episodes on The CW on Wednesday, October 8.
