Guardians Of The Galaxy Should Break August Record, Could Top $80 Million
By Nick Tylwalk
Marvel seems to have made a winning bet with Guardians of the Galaxy, both with its subject matter and its late summer release date.

It’s almost certainly primed for a record opening weekend for any movie opening in August (yes, it’s an August movie, even though you could see it at 7 pm on July 31). Early predictions had it eclipsing $70 million, which would be enough to set a new mark.
But some forecasters are aiming even higher. Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo, one of the sharpest minds around at calling weekend totals, is calling for $82 million. He cites Disney’s marketing blitz, the fact that the movie is opening in over 4,000 theaters and its positive reception — it’s currently sitting at 91 percent fresh with critics and 95 percent fresh with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes as I write this.
I’ll go even further and suggest that even though movies don’t tend to open big in August, a relatively weak slate of July releases this year could also help it. Moviegoers are ready for one more fun popcorn movie before the summer ends, and Guardians of the Galaxy definitely fits the bill.
So the record should be in the bag, but how high can Guardians soar? We’ll know in about 48 hours.
