The walker-filled universe created by Robert Kirkman in The Walking Dead is just too tempting for video game companies to resist. We’ve seen multiple studios explore it with varying degrees of success, but now Kirkman and the creators of the Payday franchise are tealing up for a whole new take.

As revealed today, Starbreeze Studios and Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment are partnering to create Overkill’s The Walking Dead, a new title that will release in 2016. Starbreeze will publish the game, which is described as a “co-op first person shooter with elements of action, role-playing, survival horror and stealth.”
Overkill is an offshoot of Starbreeze, which is why Overkill’s The Walking Dead can be credibly called an indie game. Most other details, including important stuff like platforms on which it will release, are still unknown. But one thing the announcement did cover is that it will stick closely to the world of The Walking Dead comics.
“From day one on this project it’s been clear to me that this is the Walking Dead co-op action game fans have been waiting for,” Kirkman said in a statement. “I can’t wait for people to learn just what OVERKILL has been cooking up for this game. Skybound is always about breaking new ground and trying to find something unexpected in all endeavors and this game continues that tradition in grand style.”
That’s all we’ve got for now. Well, that and the fact that there will be at least some crossover between the new game and Payday 2. Oh, and there’s this release trailer. Enjoy!
