Maybe this isn’t news and I just missed it before, but it kind of surprised me when I was reading this Entertainment Weekly piece on The Flash: Season Zero comic that will help expand upon the world of The Flash on TV when I saw police officer Eddie Thawne described as the “new beau” of Iris West.

That could make things a little complicated for Barry Allen, as Thawne’s name suggests he might end up as one of Flash’s greatest enemies: Reverse-Flash, Professor Zoom or just plain Zoom depending on which era of the comics you’re talking about. The show is making Barry and Iris de facto brother and sister since the West family takes Allen in after his mom is killed and his dad is arrested, which makes any romantic feelings they might develop tricky from the start. Throw an arch-enemy into the mix and you’ve got the makings of a real mess.
Not that a DC super hero show on The CW would ever resort to a weird love triangle or anything (ahem, Arrow, ahem). There’s no guarantee that Thawne turns bad, that his relationship with Iris lasts all season or that Barry and Iris ever consider being more than friends and pseudo-siblings, but it’s something to keep in the back of your mind.
The Flash zips onto The CW for the first time on Tuesday, October 7.
