Spider-Man Unlimited An Endless Runner Like No Other

When Spider-Man Unlimited was first officially announced at Comic-Con International, there was a lot of excitement over the fact that it would feature more playable versions of Spider-Man than any video game ever and would draw on Spider-Verse for inspiration. That was immediately followed by the requisite eye-rolling once people found out that it was going to be a mobile game, and that it was an endless runner.

Having had a chance to play it before it officially launched today, I’ll say this: give Spider-Man Unlimited a chance, especially if you’re a big fan of the wall-crawler. First of all, it’s probably slightly unfair to pigeonhole it as an endless runner. Yes, running through levels does make up the bulk of the gameplay, but there are henchmen to fight along the way, boss battles against multi-dimensional versions of the Sinister Six, and some really well-done segments with web-swinging, wall-crawling and free-falling that add some welcome variety.

The art style is uniquely excellent, and the dialogue between Spidey, Nick Fury and the villains is snappy and funny, particularly once Peter Parker learns he’ll be meeting up with different versions of himself over and over again. The overall story even works in ISO-8, giving it a connection to all of the other Marvel mobile games out there right now. In a relatively short time, I was able to unlock Mangaverse Spider-Man, Secret War Spider-Man, Battle-Damaged Spider-Man and Last Stand Spider-Man (from Spider-Man: Reign), which gives you just a sample of the different ones available right off the bat.

With a bunch of different Spider-Men in the game at launch, daily challenges and weekly events, plus the promise of more content to come, it was hard for me to stop playing Spider-Man Unlimited — except that the energy mechanic made sure that I did. Look for a full review in the next day or two at our sister site, App Trigger, but you can grab the game now off the iOS App Store or Windows Phone Store to take a swing for yourself.
