Since it’s a runner, there aren’t that many complicated tricks to discuss when it comes to racking up high scores. I mean, you mostly just have to avoid running into stuff, right?
While that’s mostly true, there are some subtleties to Spider-Man Unlimited that are helpful to keep in mind while you help a variety of Spideys spring, swing and crawl through New York in pursuit of a multi-dimensional incarnation of the Sinister Six. Here are some tips and strategies that we’ve found to be worthwhile:
- Keep your eyes on the vials. When enemies and obstacles start coming at you quickly, it can sometimes be hard to tell which way you should zag to keep your run going. The most obvious way to determine where the path is clear is to see where the vials are located. The game never places them in locations that you can’t get to safely — for instance, it won’t loop vials over a flamethrower that isn’t safe to jump — so simply following them is a good strategy when you aren’t sure where to tread.
- Use the right Spider-Man for the job. Each alternate Spider-Man has as at least one special ability, and while they don’t change the way you use them, they should help determine where you use them. For example, if the goal you are trying to complete involves stringing together a number of combos, you’re going to want to use a Spidey with a bonus on combos.
- When in doubt, Spider-Armor is a good fallback. That’s because he earns a 30 percent higher score from running. Guess what? Since you’re doing a lot of running, and a high score is always one of your objectives, that’s the single best ability in the game at launch.
- Don’t ignore the events. While the story mode is the meat and potatoes of the game and unlimited mode is great for leveling up different Spider-Men, events offer some really great rewards for both cumulative play and high finishes on their leaderboards. Always check to see what’s going on and how much time remains, as they are only around for a limited time each.
- Every Spider-Man is important. Even the more common characters can come in handy for event bonuses and some of the side missions in story mode that require a specific Spider-Man. Don’t be so quick to dismiss even the likes of the Bombastic Bag Man.
- Expand your roster space as much as possible. We just told you that having a lot of different Spider-Men on hand can come in handy. On top of that, boosting the rarer characters up to higher level caps requires the sacrifice of three different cards. You’ll want to expand as quickly as you can, first by spending vials and later by using iSO-8 when you have enough to spare. Speaking of everyone’s favorite mystery element …
- Don’t waste your ISO-8. There’s nothing worse than spending two or four units of ISO-8 and then wiping out right after that. You need it to use the premium portal, to expand your roster and sometimes to rank up a Spider-Man. Think carefully about using it to extend a run unless there’s a worthwhile goal within easy reach: like getting an even higher spot on an event leaderboard or finishing a mission that awards more ISO-8 than you’re spending.
