What Trick Arrows Might We See On Season 3 Of Arrow?
By Nick Tylwalk
During the first two seasons of Arrow, Oliver Queen has mostly stuck to shooting regular arrows, the kind with the pointy ends that either hurt/disable people (in Season 2) or kill them (O.G. Season 1). That might be changing in Season 3, though.

As Newsarama editor Lucas Siegel explains, there are two reasons to think we’ll see some trick arrows up Ollie’s sleeve beginning this fall: some have already been introduced in Arrow: Season 2.5, the digital comic that fills in the blanks between the Season 2 finale and the upcoming premiere, and executive producer Marc Guggenheim has pretty much flat out said to expect them, beginning with the very first episode.
Like Batman, writers have had Green Arrow all over the scale that ranges from “gritty and realistic” at one end to “fanciful and almost sci-fi” at the other, and his selection of arrows has changed many times. I’m not going to bother listing all of the trick arrows he’s fired over the years — that’s what we have Wikipedia for — but with all due respect to the fan favorite Boxing Glove Arrow, here are a few I think we might actually see on screen this season:
- Bola Arrow — Ollie is already pretty good at taking down fleeing criminals by shooting them in the leg, but sometimes he might not want to wound them at all. The Bola Arrow would work well for bloodless takedowns.
- EMP Arrow — This one originated on Smallville and not the comics, but it seems like something Team Arrow’s friends at S.T.A.R. Labs could whip up and would be handy against technology-based villains.
- Flash Arrow — Not an arrow that summons Barry Allen, as useful as that would be, but one that functions like a flashbang grenade.
- Grappling Hook Arrow — I’d almost bet money on this one as a way to help Arrow and Arsenal get around the rooftops of Starling City. If it fires a cable that attaches to a bow, you’ve got an instant way to swing between buildings and/or save yourself from falling to your doom.
- Smokescreen Arrow — Another pretty simple one to whip up, and good for keeping low level goons in the dark. Literally.
- Sonic Arrow — Canary already has the tech. Just attach her device to an arrow shaft and boom, instant Sonic Arrow.
