Netflix Nabs ‘Gotham’ Streaming Australia Rights
By Skip Harvey
In an unprecedented move a few weeks ago, Netflix managed to secure the rights to stream Gotham–before the series even aired. They seem so sure of the move that they’ve just announced their new deal to acquire the series’s rights in Australia. This is most significant because the streaming service had yet to announce that it was even launching Down Under. Recently they had confirmed expansion into several European countries–France, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland. Not only does that mean that Gotham will be streaming internationally just after the end of season one, but that it will essentially be Netflix’s flagship show (not produced by them).
FOX and Netflix both seem to have a lot of confidence in the potential of the series and are going to great ends to push it. After having seen the pilot at Comic-Con, I can’t say I share their enthusiasm. That doesn’t mean the show won’t be a hit or fulfill its potential, but it has a bit to go. The FOX series premieres September 22nd and you can read my review for the pilot right here.
