By Nick Tylwalk
Leave it to Gerard Way, former lead singer of My Chemical Romance and Eisner Award-winning writer of The Umbrella Academy, to come up with possibly the most mind-blowing alternate take on Spider-Man so far.

Way’s Marvel debut is coming in Edge of Spider-Verse #5, and if you like your comics with a sci-fi or anime twist, this might be the one for you. Way and artist Jake Wyatt are teaming to present a futuristic New York protected by the SP//dr: an incredible suit of powered armor that can only function when the right human pilot combines with something else.
“In a futurist city fairly different from the New York we are familiar with, our version of Spider-Man takes the shape of a government project: SP//dr,” Way said in an interview with Marvel.com “SP//dr is comprised of three vital components: a pilot, a machine, and a radioactive sentient spider acting as one half of the brain that makes it all work. Peni Parker is a young girl, who, left parentless, is adopted by her Aunt May and Uncle Ben, the two heads of the SP//dr project. When they realize Peni is the only one who can successfully pair with SP//dr, they make the unorthodox decision to train her as SP//dr’s newest pilot.”
Sounds like what you’d get if you mashed Spider-Man together with your favorite giant mecha anime, which is just a little different from what we’re used to seeing. Get a first look at this unique spin below, and look for Edge of Spider-Verse #5 to hit stores and digital on October 15.
