How are You Spending National Comic Book Day?

Many of you are likely unaware, but today is National Comic Book Day! No, not Free Comic Book Day or Batman Day. Today’s holiday is mired in mysterious origin and sporadic observation, but heck, who are we to complain about a day that celebrates comic books? Even Comixology seems unclear as to how long this has been going on.

So, today isn’t getting a lot of press but it has a hashtag so it has to be a real thing, right?

One of the interesting things going on online today is the aforementioned retailer’s official Tumblr. They’re posting a brief history of comics, hour by hour.

"1933 – Siegel & Schuster Create SupermanWhen two Jewish schoolboys teamed-up on a simple illustrated sci-fi story called The Reign of The Superman, they didn’t just make history, they changed it forever.1960’s – Stan Lee & The Rise of Marvel ComicsIn 1961 Stan Lee & Jack Kirby created the Fantastic Four, and on the wave of meteoric success went on to create even more of comics most beloved characters such as Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, and more.“The Marvel of the 1960s was in its own way the counterpart of the French New Wave… Marvel was pioneering new methods of comics storytelling and characterization, addressing more serious themes, and in the process keeping and attracting readers in their teens and beyond. Moreover, among this new generation of readers were people who wanted to write or draw comics themselves, within the new style that Marvel had pioneered, and push the creative envelope still further.”-Peter Sanderson"

Jumping from 1933 to Stan Lee seems like it’s omitting a bit. Like, oh I don’t know, The Seduction of the Innocent? Anything Batman, for that matter? Either way, should be a good way to spend an afternoon.
