The New 52: Futures End – September Event – Week 4
By Steve Lam
Superman: Futures End #1
Writer: Dan Jurgens / Artist: Lee Weeks / Cover: Ken Lashley
Official Synopsis
There’s a new, much darker Superman prowling the streets of Metropolis! But who exactly is he?
Spoiler-Free Reaction
This was a character development piece that didn’t bore the reader with too many stagnant pages. The final battle was a fun scene and a great way to ignite a character’s realization. I was a bit hesitant on the art as some panels looked washed out, but I suppose it’s used to convey the not-so-bright-post-Superman world. Since this is a direct tie-in to Futures End, it’s almost essential reading to find out why there’s a masked Superman.
Spoilerific Plot Points
- Billy Batson finally gives the true reason for impersonating Superman: During the war, Superman saved his life from a double-crossing Black Adam.
- Billy Batson reverts to Shazam when he realizes that him being himself is just as important.
- A direct tie-in to Futures End. This issue Billy Batson’s arc — him coming to terms that Shazam is just as needed as Superman.
