I’m talking about Bond. James Bond, to be exact. Dynamite Entertainment announced today that it had acquired the worldwide publishing rights for comics, graphic novels and digital comics featuring Agent 007, with new material coming sometime in 2015.
It’s been a while since any American publisher tackled Bond — the short-lived Topps Comics last gave it a go back in the mid-90s — but his history in comic book form dates all the way back to 1962 and an adaptation of the very first Bond move, Dr. No. He’s successfully managed to keep up with the times on the big screen, and his adventures have never really gone out of style, so there’s plenty that writers and artists should be able to do with him in print.
Dynamite didn’t reveal much of their overall strategy for the license except to say that the first comics will deal with his development as an agent prior to Casino Royale, the initial outing for current screen Bond Daniel Craig. It also sounds as if the company may get into the back stories of various Bond villains, which should prove equally fertile ground.
The deal with Ian Fleming Publications also means the stories will be considered canonical, and they can reference any of the Ian Fleming novels as well. With a new movie on the way next year as well, 2015 could be a very good year to be a James Bond fan — and aren’t we all?
