NYCC 2014: New Secret Wars By Hickman And Ribic Coming Spring 2015
By Nick Tylwalk
I saw a lot of things on the first day of New York Comic Con 2014, but one of the biggest things that happened Thursday was something announced elsewhere. We all suspected that Jonathan Hickman’s runs on Avengers and New Avengers were leading to an event, but few people could have guessed exactly what it is: a new Secret Wars.

Comic Book Resources reports that Marvel used an off-site event here at NYCC to announce a new iteration of the event that was sort of the granddaddy of them all for the spring of 2015, written by Hickman and illustrated by Esad Ribic. It will begin next May and run for a full year.
Just from looking at this image Marvel released by Alex Ross, the new Secret Wars looks a little more complicated than the original. That one was supposed to be heroes versus villains with the winning side’s members getting their hearts’ desires thanks to the Beyonder (it didn’t quite work out that way), but this one appears to be a battle between heroes from different times and possibly even different realities. I would think this would squash talk of a Marvel full line reboot, but who knows?
The CBR piece also notes that the story will spill into the agreements Marvel has with its merchandising partners, and since the original Secret Wars was done mostly at the behest of a toy company, I suppose there’s a sort of symmetry to that. We’re also told to expect more announcements up to and beyond May, so … yeah, stay tuned.
