Marvel used the “Axel-In-Charge” panel today at New York Comic Con to announce Ant-Man, an ongoing series from writer Nick Spencer and artist Ramon Rosanas that will see its first issue release in January. Spencer called Lang a good guy with classic “Marvel Style flaws” that he was looking forward to exposing to the public.
Few heroes have as much emotional baggage as Lang, considering that he’s lost both his wife and daughter (the super hero known as Stature) along the way. He’s also got a criminal past he’s been atoning for, and he’s died and returned thanks to some nifty time travel shenanigans. Yet he still manages to have a sense of humor, which is pretty impressive considering all he’s been through.
This won’t be the first Ant-Man solo book for Marvel, which had Eric O’Grady star in The Irredeemable Ant-Man back in 2006-2007. Lang has been featured in the Fantastic Four and the Avengers at various times, but this turn in the spotlight is undoubtedly intended to be timed with the movie, which can’t hurt since he’s not well known to the general public.
It’s also worth noting that Ant-Man was in the promotional images for Avengers NOW! That makes this even less of s surprise, but still a welcome development. And with January only three months away, we should be getting a first look at issue #1 pretty soon.
