Why Spider-Girl is Marvel’s best female character
By Travis Ellis
For my next article I’m going to dive into The Stunning (and Amazing, and Spectacular) Spider-Girl. Who in my honest opinion is truly the best character in all of the known Spider-Verse (I know the comic book event explains the Spider-Verse as every Spider-Person ever, but what about Black Cat, or The Lizard don’t they deserve a spot here?) I hope to cover what makes her a valuable character, take her history..and mix it with my own views and ask the question: Does she deserve to be Marvel’s finest female hero? Or is she doomed to a life of being forgotten?
The seeds were planted in the second clone saga in which Peter gave up being Spider-Man to become a full time dad. He was then replaced by his Clone, who at this point went by the name Ben Reilly. Green Goblin has manipulated the cast of characters, and claimed that Peter who had thought he indeed was the clone was the actual Spider-Man, despite him saying otherwise at the start! Things get really complicated so if I mix up the histories please don’t get horribly upset!
Mary Jane went into labor and gave birth to a girl named Mayday Parker, who is claimed to be dead in the mainstream 616 Universe. In MC2 (Marvel Comics 2) universe which actually is a branch off of the main universe, a “What If” future; Mayday was kidnapped and then brought back by a now seemingly good clone that had up to that point been a crazy and delusional killer.
Over time Peter would sneak out to fight crime still leaving Mary Jane to deal with a fast growing May until one night a battle against the Green Goblin cost him his leg and caused an early retirement. A now 16 year old Mayday starts to show she has inherited her dad’s powers at a High School basketball game,
and decides after finding out who her dad was to become Spider-Girl!
Now she’s Spider-Girl in an alternative world where the Fantastic Four is now five, the Avengers are people we’ve never seen before. Villains like Hobgoblin, Venom and Carnage make a return. Kane is now a huge help/good guy to, Daredevil’s true identity is mind blowing and I can’t begin to spoil it! Kids of all the characters you love inhabit this world such as, J2 (Juggernauts son) and also Black Cat’s daughter has a story to tell here! This world is full of twists and turns and interesting ideas. We watch Mayday traverse all of this as she goes from a young reckless girl to a hero just like her dad, and that my friends is an incredible journey.
Part of the reason why I like her is because she’s Peter’s ‘Other Half‘. That said I don’t think she’s his soul mate. In reality Stan Lee himself has said Peter as Spider-Man is one of (if not the THE best) superheroes to ever grace a comic book because of the fact that he was an everyman with his own flaws and own pains and own sacrifices to make. The chance to overcome his mistakes and regrets to become something more. It was the tale of a hero, and that hero could have been any guy under a mask! But I’d only imagine that women who were fans probably had a harder time finding their place in the realm of the Spider-Verse. At the time it was just Black Cat and Mary Jane that held any sort of impact in terms of Spider-Man’s strong supporting female cast. Sure Black Cat and Mary Jane, Anna Maria, and Silk (Cindy Moon) are all great characters, but none can hold their place next to Spider-Girl
Another reason why I feel she should be here to stay is because she at least according to the back of her graphic novels is the single longest running female super heroine to star in her own comic book in Marvel’s long history. That in itself says something spectacular that fans clearly love her and her story. Although marvel seems unsure as to why and has tried to pull the plug many times in the past but we as fans have grown as one and have showm overwhelming positivity so much so that we’ve kept her here.
I guess another reason I like her is because like Cindy Moon/Silk she’s a great character, with a great story behind her, and a ton of stuff left to tell. The story isn’t done, and I know that the creators are very excited to bring her back sometime down the road should those stars align. In the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man later this month she has some very big stories yet to come.
The Spider-Verse event is set to have Mayday Parker as a very prominent member of the team up against some tough challenges. I’m fully confident that Mayday will overcome these challenges and remain popular and a real star, after all when life gets the Parkers down they rise up. Life is going to get very hard but the stories told from here on out seem to be truly great, and I hope Marvel respects her and doesn’t pull the plug indefinitely by killing her off in this event (like the Amazing Spider Friends) Alas we’ll have to see. Time will tell, hang in there and shine on. The future is mysteriously bright!
