Will The New Secret Wars Reference All Past Marvel Events?

Marvel has turned into quite the tease over the past few days. First we got the Civil War #1 image yesterday with no information to go with it except for “Summer 2015.”

Today, we got an “Age of Ultron vs. Marvel Zombies” image in a tweet that you can see below:

One of these teasers by itself could just be a revisiting of that particular story. Two is a trend, it’s just figuring out exactly where it’s leading us.

Th obvious guess is that it has something to do with the new Secret Wars unveiled during New York Comic Con. As sharp-eyed fans all over the internet have pointed out, the promotional image for that upcoming 2015 event by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic has Marvel characters from various times and realities all doing battle with each other.

That being the case, it’s quite possible that Secret Wars will reference all kinds of past marvel events as it unfolds — maybe all of them, as the series is supposed to run for one whole year. That would certainly explain these images we’re seeing for next summer, by which time Secret Wars will be in full swing. And with Marvel promising that this will be the biggest event of all time, what could be bigger than hopscotching between every prior epic?

I didn’t come up with this theory myself, as I’ve seen it advanced in various places already, but I do like it. Marvel obviously isn’t going to give us all the details just yet when a speculative frenzy works much better to get people intrigued and excited, but if we start getting Secret Invasion and Acts of Vengeance teasers too, we’ll know we’re probably on the right track.
