Some rumors are pretty simple, and others are multi-part beasts that require some explanation. This is one of the latter.

Variety is reporting that a Detroit news station got word from an extra on the set of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice — apparently unfazed by the $5 million fee he might face for violating the NDA — that Robin is female in the upcoming movie. Add in the fact that Jena Malone has been seen on set sporting red hair, and … well, it’s not exactly 2 + 2 = 4, but it does add up to Malone playing the Carrie Kelley Robin.
If you’ve read Frank Miller’s seminal The Dark Knight Returns, you’ll recognize Kelley as the female Robin that aids the older Batman in that story. That could mean that Dawn of Justice is incorporating elements of that story into its plot, or it could just mean that the Kelley Robin seemed like a good way to differentiate this Batman from all the movie incarnations that came before him.
Or it could mean nothing at all, since this is far from confirmed, and it’s possible Warner Bros. won’t comment on it at all until we start seeing trailers. Considering Dawn of Justice doesn’t come out until 2016, that might not be until next summer, at the earliest, but you’d better believe people will be working on either verifying or debunking this rumor in the months to come.
