Welcome back to another Gotham Episode Review, Batman fans! Last night’s episode of Gotham was titled ‘Spirit of the Goat’ and it was the best episode of Gotham yet!

More from TV

In this episode we finally get a look into Harvey Bullock’s past, and as I could have predicted, he was once as optimistic as Jim Gordon, always trying to be a good cop and likely trying to make Gotham a better place in the process. His old partner taught him that the golden rule of Gotham was “no heroes”, and unfortunately that lesson was finally hammered home when Bullock and his partner cornered a serial killer calling himself the Spirit of the Goat. Harvey refused to wait for back up as he didn’t want the Goat’s third victim to die while they waited for back up. Bullock and his partner do manage to catch the killer but the victim was already dead when they arrived and the bust came at the high price of Bullock’s partner’s ability to walk.

Now ten years later a much more cynical and crooked Bullock is forced to re-open the investigation when an apparent copy cat Spirit of the Goat killer emerges. Worse, the killer manages to recreate details of the original killings that were never revealed to the public. Meanwhile Renee Montoya and her partner have found a witness to Gordon’s supposed murder of Oswald Cobblepot and have gotten a warrant for his arrest. Gordon and Bullock catch the killer, and while he sits in interrogation Bullock notices a nervous habit of the mental patient murderer and tracks down his hypnotic therapist, who is the real master mind behind the Spirit of the Goat killings. She was also the therapist of the man responsible for the killings ten years before and she sicks one of her patients on him.

Bullock manages to stop the crazy therapist and as he and Gordon are wrapping up the case with their captain back at the precinct, Montoya and her partner arrive to arrest Gordon for Cobblepot’s murder. Just as they begin to arrest Bullock as well for conspiracy to commit murder in walks Oswald Cobblepot to announce that he is still alive. And that my friends is how this wonderful episode ends!

We don’t see a whole lot of Bruce and even less of Selina, but what little we do see of Selina in this episode has her sneaking into Wayne Manor, apparently just to check on Bruce, and to see what he’s been up to with his investigations. I love Selina’s fascination with Bruce, it seems to stem from her witnessing his parents murders and likely feeling a connection to him as she herself is an orphan. We didn’t really get to see Fish Mooney in this episode which is a shame, but we did get to see a bit more of Nygma in this episode than we have in previous episodes which was quite nice. I actually have a theory that Nygma has a bit of a crush on Kristen Kringle and when she rejects him that is what will make him crack and turn into the Riddler. That’s just my personal little theory though, and not anything official.

I really enjoyed the look into Bullock’s past, it was nice to see that he wasn’t always the pessimistic and crooked man that he is now. It gives me a bit of hope that he will be able to at least change for the good enough to be on Gordon’s side when he takes over the police department. It also of course worries me just a bit that this is what could happen to Gordon, in fact it may be that he is finally in a similar mind frame when Batman comes into the picture.
