Hans Zimmer Not Scoring the ‘Batman’ Part of ‘Batman v Superman’

You may remember Hans Zimmer’s work scoring the Dark Knight Trilogy as well as last year’s Man of Steel. Well, he’s coming back to score Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but not entirely. In a recent interview, the composer discussed how he intends to write music for the film…except the Batman part.

"You know something? I have agonized over it. I agonized over it, so much so that finally, I went, I don’t want to betray what Chris [Nolan], James Newton Howard and I did. And so I asked Zack [Snyder] if it would be OK if I called a friend in. And I’m going to be working with Junkie XL, who really is a great friend. He just finished the Mad Max score. I said to him, “You take care of Batman. I’ll do the other guy.” And Zack loved that idea. It’s a way out."

I admittedly enjoyed his work on both Batman and Superman films, though he’s not a ‘theme’ composer like John Williams. I did miss a recognizable theme song like Williams’s Superman score or Danny Elfman’s Batman opus. They are iconic and stand the test of time. Zimmer approaches things as if he’s creating a building, ambient mood. His music often sets a constant tone, rather than occasionally inserting incidental music.

Either way, this film should be unlike most we’ve seen. For a sample of Junkie XL’s work, check out this cut he did for the Dark Knight Rises soundtrack:
