BSP Roundtable: Who Should Marvel Get To Play Captain Marvel?
By Nick Tylwalk
Jennifer Morrison
Nominated by: Steve Lam
Currently on the hit show Once Upon a Time, Jennifer Morrison plays Emma Swan, the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. Going up against fantastic villains won’t be foreign to Morrison, as she’s already faced some powerful beings on the show. Her look and demeanor also match that of Carol Danvers. If Morrison is a front-runner, her move into the Marvel Cinematic Universe would probably be frictionless, as Once Upon a Time is on ABC, which is owned by Disney — the same company that owns Marvel Studios.
Morrison’s current resume is definitely impressive, but the one experience that makes her a standout is her time with Dr. Gregory House on House. Already conditioned for humorous arrogance and sarcastic prodding, Morrison’s Carol Danvers will be well-prepared for Tony Stark — when she finally teams up with the Avengers.
Charlize Theron
Nominated by: John McArthur
Based off of past castings for female roles, like Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Natalie Portman, I wouldn’t be surprised if Marvel signs an “A-list” actress to play Carol Danvers. That being said, I’m guessing Jennifer Lawrence is off the table due to her involvement with 20th Century Fox playing Mystique in the X-men films. I’m not saying I would be that surprised if she was cast, but I think it’s unlikely. I think another possible candidate would be Emma Stone. Like Lawrence, she has also been involved in the production of a “Marvel” film not owned by Disney/Marvel. Unlike Lawrence, Emma Stone’s Character, Gwen Stacy, will most likely not be involved in the future films.
Still, the likelihood that Stone suits up as Captain Marvel isn’t that great. All things considered, the actress i would like to see play Danvers is Charlize Theron. I really think she would provide solid screen presence, while being a character that fans could relate to and sympathize with. Most importantly I think Theron could play the role of a total badass, someone that really strikes fear into the hearts of evildoers.
