Chris Nolan Takes a Shot at Marvel Films

As a life-long DC fan, I have to say that I’m a big fan of Marvel’s shared cinematic universe. Let me explain: DC’s bread and butter was always continuity. Everything made sense, everything tied together and nothing conflicted. Marvel’s films do a great job of creating a cohesive universe that all tie together with no conflicting onscreen events. Their TV shows crossover with their films, their films crossover with each other. It’s glorious, and until recently, DC hurt itself by not going that direction.

Christopher Nolan crafted the brilliant Dark Knight Trilogy, but proved that DC had no intention of tying that era to the upcoming movie-verse. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Nolan was asked about whether it was in the cards to have Man of Steel director Zack Snyder tack on an after credits scene at the end of The Dark Knight Rises.

"“The Batman movies – that take, that tone – came out of nowhere,” said director Zack Snyder, who first met Nolan on a Warner Bros plane heading to a film industry convention in Las Vegas and leapt at the chance to direct a similarly toned Superman reboot, Man Of Steel – for which he studied, at Nolan’s request, test footage from White Sands, New Mexico, to get a sense of how objects behave at high velocity. When the studio asked if Snyder would add a comedy coda ending, in the style of Marvel, Nolan’s reply was “A real movie wouldn’t do that.”"

it’s hard to argue with Nolan’s vision and success, but it is in line with DC’s reluctance to tie in it’s properties together. That’s why they’ve cast Ezra Miller as the Justice League Flash, even though there is currently a Flash TV show starring another actor. Thankfully DC seems to have woken up to what works, like in the Marvel films.
