Guardians Of The Galaxy Helps Disney To Record Financial Performance
By Nick Tylwalk
Guardians of the Galaxy has done a lot of amazing things this year. It made a ton of non-comics fans care about characters whom they had never heard of before, including an anthropomorphic raccoon and a living tree, and it even somehow made cassette tapes cool again.Or maybe that should be cool for the first time.
It also was a very real contributor to the record financial performance Disney just reported for its recently completed fiscal year. That’s because Disney’s studio entertainment segment was the strongest part of its business. In plain English, that means movies, and Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the company’s biggest movies of the last 12 months.
(Note: one of the Bam Smack Pow research interns just handed me a note that says Frozen on it, but I don’t know what that means.)
All of this is really just saying that while Disney as a whole is on fire right now, Marvel Studios is a big reason why. Not too many companies, especially those in the entertainment business, have a license to print money the way Disney does with Marvel movies. It’s true that the gravy train could encounter issues at any time, it’s hard to imagine that the whole thing could get derailed before we get to Avengers: Infinity War, and that’s more than three years away.
Remember those posters for Guardians that came out before the film with the tag line “You’re welcome?” Maybe that was from Marvel to Disney.
