Batman Makes More Than Avengers, But Less Than Spider-Man

Merchandizing! It’s the end-all be-all of popular characters. Really popular characters get their names attached to the weirdest stuff, because people think merely slapping the name or image of the character on just about anything will make it sell like hotcakes (see featured image above of Batman Leg Lamp).

In the world of comic-book licensing, Batman is no doubt a money-maker, beating out best friend/superhero rival Superman and even Marvel’s hottest film property the Avengers. But unfortunately there is one hero that dwarfs the Caped Crusader by a long-shot, and that’s Marvel’s own web-head, Spider-Man, who is a licensing empire unto himself, according to a Yahoo article

From the article:

"The Licensing Letter listed Marvel’s Spider-Man global retail sales at $1.3 billion and Avengers at $325 million in 2013, compared with DC’s Batman at $494 million and Superman at $277 million."

Can Batman ever catch up to Spider-Man or DC to Marvel for that matter? Ira Mayer, publisher of The Licensing Letter, believes it’s possible. But he also said that Marvel has a pretty big head start and it’s going to take plenty of time, money & effort on Warner Bros. part in the meantime to close that gap.

In my humble opinion, while both Batman & Spider-Man are perennially popular characters that will always make lots of money, Spider-Man is such a kid-friendly marketing machine that it will always be hard for Batman, who even at his campiest is just by his nature more appealing to a more adult audience to match it.
