Warning: Spoilers ahead for the Gotham episode ‘Harvey Dent’

Next week will be the mid-season finale and it looks like it’s going to be very exciting! This Week’s episode of Gotham was aptly named ‘Harvey Dent’ as it introduced the Assistant District Attorney as a new ally for Jim Gordon in his fight to get justice for the Waynes. Although this episode was meant to generate a lot of excitement about Harvey Dent, but to be honest I was far more excited by the first true meeting of the Bat and the Cat, and I think most Gotham fans feel the same!

More from TV

Selina has once again slunk into Gordon’s life and this time she sits down with a sketch artist and describes the man she saw kill the Waynes. Gordon realizes that she is going to require protection now that she’s told the police what she knows, he brought her home with him to Barbara’s apartment but Barbara has left Gotham and so he takes Selina to Wayne manor where she should be safe with Bruce and Alfred. Alfred has started to teach Bruce how to fight and Selina finds it somewhat amusing to see Bruce ‘training’. Meanwhile Gordon and Bullock are dealing with a new case, one involving a mentally ill bomber who was broken out of police custody and forced to build bombs for the Russian mobsters who busted him out. This is honestly just a side story as far as importance goes, a bit like filler content for the episode because the important stories are that of Harvey getting to work on the Wayne murder and Bruce and Selina getting to know each other.

I live tweet as I watch every episode of Gotham and there were quite a few tweets gushing on the adorableness of Bruce and Selina, and the first meeting of the Bat and the Cat. Even at such young ages the two are clearly very drawn to each other. They both intrigue and fascinate each other, and I think most people who saw ‘Harvey Dent’ will agree that Camren Bicondova and David Mazouz are a joy to watch together. Cat (as she prefers to be called) declares that Bruce is the strangest kid she’s ever met, and Bruce thinks she has quite a strange outlook on life when she asks why he should learn anything when he’s a billionaire. She also keeps asking him if he wants to kiss her, and while I’m sure he does as a former preteen girl myself I can say for sure that she keeps asking that because she wants him to kiss her.

As for Dent himself, we did get some decent foreshadowing into his future, he already employs his infamous two headed coin, though it is currently in pristine condition and he uses it for more noble purposes, like convincing juvenile delinquents that luck has given them a second chance, instead of out right telling them that he is giving them another shot. Renee Montoya and her partner Crispus Allen introduce Gordon to Dent, declaring that “he is one of us” meaning that he isn’t dirty and can be trusted. While discussing the Wayne murders in Dent’s office we get a little hint at what he is to become when he turns on a projector and briefly half of his face is cast in shadow. Even later in the episode, when Harvey is confronting Dick Lovecraft, the man Dent suspects is ultimately responsible for the Wayne murders, we see Harvey’s darker side, also known as Bad Harv, when he loses his temper with Lovecraft.

In case you weren’t aware, Harvey Dent has always had a darker side that he struggled to control, in Batman TAS he was in therapy for his anger issues, and some have speculated that he has split personality. The accident that turned Harvey Dent into Two-Face did not create his evil side, only brought it permanently to the forefront. It’s a little too early in the game to determine if Gotham’s casting of Nicholas D’Agosto as Harvey Dent was the right call, but so far I haven’t seen anything I didn’t like. And as for the rest of the cast, I have to say that the best relationship development other than that of the Bat and the Cat is the relationship between Alfred and Bruce. The two are quickly becoming very close and I am not the only one who is loving their development.
