DC Challenges Spanish Soccer Team Valencia, Says Its Crest Too Much Like Batman Symbol
By Nick Tylwalk
You know all about Batman v. Superman. Now get ready for Batman v. Valencia.
If you’re a fan of the beautiful game, you probably already know Valenica as one of the most prominent non-Real Madrid, non-Barcelona teams in La Liga, the top flight of Spanish soccer. The team’s crest has historically had a bat forming the outside of its shield, and a pretty cool-looking one at that.
Now the club is trying to trademark a new bat that you can see in the image above, and DC isn’t too pleased about it. The publisher has already taken action with an official complaint to the European Union’s trademark registration organization, the OHIC (no relation to OMAC, as far as we know) in an attempt to put a stop to it.
I’m no expert in trademark law, but generally companies win those disputes when they can prove that people will confuse one thing for another. A soccer team and one of the world’s most famous costumed crimefighters are in pretty different lines of work, so I’m not 100 percent sure what the issue is here.
Plus the Valencia bat has realistic ears instead of the famous Batman points. The logos are in the same ballpark, but my thought is that Valencia will probably win this one. Sorry Bruce.
