1. Captain America (Steve Rogers)
As hard as it sometimes seems to believe, the Avengers existed before finding Captain America frozen in a block of ice. Would they still exist in the 21st Century without Steve Rogers? That’s even harder to fathom.
When it comes to the ability to direct and inspire people, no one can touch Rogers.He proudly wears the colors of the United States, but his leadership skills have made beings of all kinds fall in line behind him. Thor would follow him anywhere, which tells you all you need to know.
More than that, he’s most often depicted as the moral compass for the team. It’s true that he can get a bit sanctimonious at times, but he never wavers, and he’s always going to try to do the most good for the most people.
It should come as no surprise that Captain America has been the official leader of the Avengers for more issues than anyone else, and he’s been looked to for guidance even more than that. Even drained of the Super-Soldier Serum and robbed of his physical vitality, Rogers has managed to find a way to contribute to the team. Though the movies have elevated Iron Man to be his equal, at least, in the Avengers hierarchy, the comics say that Cap deserves the title of the greatest Avenger of all time.
