9. Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff)

Though she’s been associated with some not so great moments in Avengers history, Wanda Maximoff has been a member in good standing for much more of her history than she’s been a villain or a threat. Scarlet Witch first joined the team in Avengers #16 as part of “Cap’s Kooky Quartet” when all of the founders departed, and she later enjoyed a long, uninterrupted run of service that lasted from Avengers #75 to Avengers #211.

For fans of the more soap opera-esque aspects of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Wanda also was part of one of the team’s most stable (if unusual) relationships for quite some time, when she was married to the Vision. She’s also caught the eye and heart of several other teammates at various times, proving there’s just something about her that’s irresistible.

Depending on who’s writing her, Scarlet Witch certainly counts as one of the most powerful Avengers, with her mutant combination of probability manipulation and outright chaos magic capable of affecting all of reality under the correct circumstances. We prefer her when she’s not being used as a deus ex machina, but whatever the scope of her abilities might be, Wanda has become one of the defining members of the team through its many incarnations.
