8. Ant-Man/Giant Man (Hank Pym)

As with the Hulk, this might seem like a slight for a man who not only was a founding member of the Avengers, but also figured out ways to keep himself relevant not only by changing his costumed identity — along with the two we listed above, he also had stints as Yellowjacket, Goliath and even the Wasp — but also by helping out with his keen scientific mind even when he temporarily decided to hang up the tights.

Still, things are always complicated when it comes to Hank Pym. His Pym particles allowed not only transformed himself and Janet van Dyne into super heroes, but also Scott Lang, his daughter Cassie, the late Bill Foster and others. On the other hand, he was also abusive to Jan at one point during their relationship and responsible for the creation of Ultron, who went on to become not just one of the Avengers’ greatest foes, but a top level threat to life in the Marvel Universe in general.

So where you rank Pym really depends on how you feel his positive and negative contributions balance out. There’s no doubt he’s been an integral part of the Avengers overall, though he hasn’t been in the mix much as of late — for instance, even with a vastly expanded roster, Jonathan Hickman decided not to use him in the fifth volume of the primary Avengers series. We’d bet, though, that as long as the team carries on, there’s always a chance he’ll return to the fold. It’s simply been part of his fiber for too long.
