4. Wasp (Janet van Dyne)

Can one of the Avengers’ smallest members also be one of its greatest? We think so, particularly if the hero in question is Janet van Dyne. As the Wasp, she probably grew the most of anyone on the team over the last 50 years of real life time, no pun intended.

Originally simply a flighty partner to Hank Pym (though motivated to become a hero by the very common desire to seek justice for the death of a loved one), Wasp became so much more than that. Her calling card may have been her fashion sense and ever-changing costumes, but Jan became one of the most reliable and confident leaders in the storied history of the team.

In fact, only Captain America was the chairperson of the Avengers for more issues than Wasp back when that distinction actually meant something. Plus if intuition is a super power, Jan probably warrants a perfect 10, as she’s always been able to uncover secrets and get to the bottom of mysteries like no one else. She’s no slouch in a fight either, using her size-changing ability, bio-electric stings and general resourcefulness to make herself a handful for all kinds of villains.

It’s really difficult to dislodge any of the heroes above Wasp on this list, but if fans want to argue that she should a spot or two higher, we wouldn’t argue all that much. She’s that important to the Avengers.
