David S. Goyer Thinks There Is “An Excellent Chance” For Constantine To Return

Once the news broke that NBC was halting production on Constantine after 13 episodes, resulting in an abbreviated freshman season, many TV observers assumed that was NBC’s way of putting it out to pasture in the nicest possible way.

But not so fast, according to producer David S. Goyer. In an interview with Deadline, he echoed previous reports that said the series could still come back and explained exactly why he feels that way:

"It’s not dead, at all, it’s solidly in contention for a second season of NBC, which is still supporting it.Constantine got caught in the midst of a change that is happening at the networks. It gets big numbers on DVR and online views, but it is sort of a tweener that doesn’t fit the traditional viewing box at the big networks. It’s not State Of Affairs, it’s just not that kind of show, but NBC likes it. It’s frustrating what happened because creatively we’ve really started to hit our stride and people are responding to that. If I were a betting man, I would say there’s an excellent chance for a second season."

Ah, but is Goyer a betting man? Almost all critics agree the show simply took a few episodes to find its voice, and that it is getting better as it goes along. So quality isn’t the issue, but the weak ratings numbers are worrisome — and almost definitely why NBC chose not to order more episodes for Season 1.

That begs the question we’ve been asking all along; namely, if Constantine would be better off on a cable channel, where the ratings bar is lower and patience is more of a virtue? NBCUniversal has a number of options available to it if it wants to bring the show back but air it elsewhere, including USA and SyFy, which is desperately trying to give itself a higher quality makeover.

Or maybe NBC just counts on the positive buzz bringing in more viewers next year on Friday nights, when the network isn’t exactly churning out smash hits anyway. NBC definitely doesn’t seem to be intentionally working to bury the show, even spotlighting stars Matt Ryan and Angelica Celaya during its Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade coverage.

Whatever the case, if Goyer is positive on the show’s chances to return, that’s a good omen — the kind that John Constantine himself could appreciate.
