There’s been a pretty credible theory going around that the end of the third movie in Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, is actually just Alfred’s dream. The reasoning is that Alfred pretty much describes that exact scene to Bruce Wayne earlier in the film, and rather than foreshadowing the ending, Bruce Wayne dies saving Gotham and the end we are seeing is just in Alfred’s mind.
It’s never been officially answered, but here’s Christan Bale’s thoughts on The Dark Knight Rises ending:

It’s just his personal opinion, but it’s probably as close to an official answer as we’ll get and given how involved and passionate Bale is about Batman, I think we can consider it pretty much official, so Bruce Wayne did get his happy ending in the Dark Knight Rises after all.
