Marvel Finds Its Luke Cage For Netflix Series

Marvel has its Luke Cage, and it’s the man thought to be the frontrunner for a while.

It’s official now though, as Marvel has announced that Mike Colter will play Luke Cage in the Netflix series of the same name. More urgently, he’ll also feature as Cage in the A.K.A. Jessica Jones series, which stars Krysten Ritter — rumored to have landed her role in part because of her chemistry with Colter — and will air second in the Netflix rotation after Daredevil.

Jones’ show will be set after her disastrous initial foray into super heroics, when she sets up shop as a private eye (as detailed in the early 2000s Marvel comic series Alias). As comic fans know, she ends up marrying Cage and the two have a daughter together, so it should be interesting to see if Marvel set them up as a potential couple on TV as well.

Colter has been on a number of notable recent TV series, including The Good Wife and the third season of American Horror Story. He’s got Luke’s current bald, goateed look down pat, though in my mind’s eye, he doesn’t seem physically quite as imposing as I imagine Cage. Maybe he’ll be pumping iron nonstop in preparation for his role.

No release date yet has been given for either A.K.A. Jessica Jones or Luke Cage, but Daredevil is set to lead off the Marvel Netflix initiative in May.
