Uncanny X-Men #27-Cyclops

Q: The one hero that most readers have objected to being absent is Cyclops. Only one person had him in their top 30, which wasn’t enough to get him on the overall top 50. Why didn’t you vote for Cyclops?

Christina Roberts, Bam Smack Pow Staff Writer: You know, I wrote the snippet for Jean Grey and took a jab at Cyclops, and I’m certain it ticked people off. He’s one of the founding members of the X-Men as well, and I was surprised that he wasn’t on the list, to be honest. Cyclops/Scott Summers is that one character who is just so easy to pick on and make fun of that you can’t help it, especially with how he’s been portrayed in the movies (mostly because the main focus has been on Wolverine and Scott has been pushed to the side).  He comes off as a dick and full of himself, and that shouldn’t be the only thing we focus on. But it’s just so easy.

Nick: For me it was simply a matter of how many X-Men should make it into my top 30. I already had Wolverine, Jean Grey, Storm and Xavier. It was simply a numbers game with Scott Summers.

Roger: I intentionally only included two X-Men — Professor X and Wolverine — because, like the Fantastic Four, the individual X-Men are really only vital as part of the team. Xavier is the founder and the mutant Moses, as it were. You cannot have mutants all over the Marvel Universe without giving props to Professor X. Wolverine’s popularity surpasses his membership as an X-Man. Plus, I really, really, never liked Cyclops. If death in the Marvel U. was ever really permanent, I would love to see Cyclops and Quicksilver do each other in. Just sayin’ …

DanielI flat-out don’t like the character, although that’s based purely on the X-Men films, and the hatred stems from the film’s deliberate portrayal of Cyclops as a jealous antagonist to the superior Wolverine. I don’t think that film trilogy did many of the X-Men any favors.

Steve: I was the guy that put him in my top 30, so instead of telling you why I didn’t vote for him, I’ll tell you why he was not only on my list, but also ranked relatively high. His visor alone is iconic, and he’s had a lot of exposure from the 1990s animated television series and the X-Men films. As one of the original members of the X-Men, he definitely deserves some attention, since Wolverine, an X-Man, is also on the final list. I think X-Men: The Last Stand really robbed Cyclops of who he was by killing him right off. Therefore, from the events last seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past, I hope he plays a bigger role in the future X-Men installments.

AdamHe’s a crybaby twerp — and James Marsden was out of his league cast against Hugh Jackman, whose Wolverine was my No. 3 — but he’s so integral to, for my money, the best super hero team ever assembled. Sorry, Avengers. I let my personal feelings get in the way. Professor X taught me better. I missed this one.
