Agents of SHIELD – What They Become: Bobbi Morse And Lance Hunter

Welcome to the recurring series “What They Become,” where you will find a look back at the first half of Season 2. Journey along as we cover where our main characters have been in the last 10 episodes of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.

Miss a post? Get caught up: Agent Melinda May  |  Grant Ward  |  Agents FitzSimmons

It’s another attempt at doing two characters at once, but these two definitely have to stay together. There’s a lot of history.

Agent Lance Hunter

At the Start of Season 2: Working for SAS alongside Agent Hartley until she is killed by Carl Creel; he then works for Director Coulson and SHIELD, though his loyalties are still murky. Constantly complaining about his hell-demon ex-wife.

At the Winter Finale: Fleeing the crumbling temple and heading back to the Bus with Bobbi Morse.

Agent Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse

At the Start of Season Two: The head of security at a Hydra facility where Agent Simmons is stationed in the lab. This lasts half an episode before she blows her cover and breaks Simmons out of there.

At the Winter Finale: Fleeing the crumbling temple and heading back to the Bus with Lance Hunter.

The In-Between: We started Season 2, episode one, with the introduction of Lance Hunter (Bobbi Morse didn’t arrive for a few more episodes). Seeming to fill the “rugged, good-looking SHIELD agent” quota in Grant Ward’s wake, most viewers didn’t quite know what to make of Hunter. He was shown double-crossing Coulson, but really double-crossing General Talbot. We were supposed to care about where his loyalties lay, but I never really found myself caring too much. He has a history with Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie and constantly tells our usual SHIELD members all about his demonic ex-wife.

Enter said demonic ex-wife, also known as Bobbi Morse, also known as Mockingbird. After breaking Simmons out of Hydra, she returns to SHIELD and integrates with the team, but not before Hunter discovers her and flips out (hilariously so). Their bickering lasts for quite some time, escalating when she uses her Hydra cover to manipulate one of her contacts, but when Hunter gets ready to take off from SHIELD, Bobbi tells him if he wants to stay, he should stay.

It’s quite obvious both of them still have feelings for each other (and that’s not even taking into account their tumble in the backseat of a car on the Bus). Hunter’s faith and trust in Bobbi has been spurned, and it takes almost the entire first half of the season for him to come around and trust her again.

Where They May Be Going: Their relationship seems to be on better footing than it has been in the past. They’ve reconnected, though they still get into the normal lover’s spats that make everyone around them roll their eyes (including some viewers, though I find their bickering chuckle-worthy). Hunter seems to have decided to stick around the SHIELD side of things, at least for a while.

What their future hinges on is what Bobbi is hiding on that flash drive. But let’s back up for a second; in an episode prior to the winter finale, Mack confronts Bobbi on the Quinjet, discussing her reconnection with Hunter and if she’s letting him into everything, even … “No,” Bobbi interrupts. “Not that.”

When she sees Mack fall back into the pit after being inhabited by the city/temple (or whatever happened to him, that will be discussed in the next article), she raids his destroyed garage, looking for a flash drive that she slips into her pocket, but Hunter notices. He says as long as it’s not about them, then he trusts her.

But the question remains: what’s on the flash drive? It will make or break their relationship. I have no ideas as to what it may contain, though Clark Gregg posting a picture of a Hawkeye/Coulson standoff from Secret Avengers #10 has people wondering if Jeremy Renner will be appearing on the show. Why do I mention this? Because in the comics, Bobbi Morse and Clint Barton are very much on-again-off-again; bringing Hawkeye into the mix would certainly bristle Hunter’s feathers. Maybe the flash drive has some intel on Barton, who knows?

It also depends on what happens with Mack. Much like the fate of FitzSimmons, whatever the outcome with Mack will affect our entire SHIELD team more than we viewers probably realize.

One thing is for certain: the twisted past that Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter have will have light shed on it before this season is out. And the repercussions could be insurmountable.
