Yes, it’s Stan Lee’s 92nd birthday! What’s that? Stan Lee has nothing to do with Batman. Oh how wrong you are.

More from Superheroes

While Stan Lee is defintely the father of Spider-Man and Marvel comics in general, his influence transcends the medium. Odds are virtually any comic writer, including some of the best people to work on Batman in the modern era, were inspired by Stan Lee. Not only that, but Stan Lee has done some work for DC comics including Batman. His Just Imagine Stan Lee series reimagines some of DC’s most iconic heroes the way Lee would’ve done them.

Lee’s version of Batman is Wayne Williams, an African American who was framed for his father’s murder. After being pardoned from prison because he saved the warden, Williams lays low and becomes a pro wrestler while tracking down his father’s killer. Unlike Batman (at least in most versions), Williams confronts his father’s killer and in the conflict, the murderer accidentally falls to his death. Williams mission turns from one of vengeance to one of justice and protecting the innocent.

While I’m not sure that version of Batman would’ve been as successful, it’s interesting to see on of the all time great minds of comic books take on how he would’ve done Batman. Happy 92nd birthday Stan Lee!
