Superior Iron Man #3 Review

Before we get to the breakdown of Superior Iron Man #3, think back on all the holiday gifts you have ever given or received. As you reflect, I’m sure there are a number of gifts that stand out. Now try to think of the best gift you have ever gotten, and how you felt opening up that gift. I remember one year for Christmas, my parents bought me the Batmobile from Batman The Animated Series, along with a plethora of other Batman toys. All I can say is that I will never forget the pure joy I felt opening up that gift. Granted, this may not be the best gift I have ever received, but it’s probably the one that has made me the happiest.

Ok, so now that you’ve picked the best present you have ever gotten, imagine that the person who gave you that present was your enemy. What do you do? Return it to spite your enemy, or enjoy it and try to bury that hatchet? The mixed feeling you would experience in that situation would most likely fall significantly short of how Matt Murdock is feeling heading into Superior Iron Man #3.

After getting his butt kicked in a fight against Tony, Matt is coming to, and his consciousness isn’t the only thing he’s regaining. Miraculously, Matt Murdock has regained the ability to see. Lets find out what implications this game change has on the life of the Man Without Fear.

Superior Iron Man #3

As Daredevil regains consciousness, he stumbles to his feet and stares at a mirror reflection of himself. The joy of being able to see wears off quickly as Matt begins to question Tony. As expected, we learn that Tony has developed a special strand of Extremis that enables Matt to see. Although the fix is not permanent, Tony is willing to work out a deal so that Matt will have free unlimited access to Extremis; all Matt has to do is buy into the product.

Unwilling to compromise that easily, Matt continues to argue with Stark.

“I’m not playing God. All this time I’ve been playing human.”

As the two continue to argue, we learn that Tony has a pretty serious God complex claiming that he isn’t playing God, but instead he has stopped playing human.

They are interrupted when Tony gets a call from She Hulk. She tells Tony that Teen Abomination is attempting to destroy Stark Island. Helpless against the power of Iron Man, Matt reluctantly watches Tony fly away.

On Stark Island, Tony is able to subdue Teen Abomination and asks what he wants. After a short conversation, Teen Abomination admits that all he wants is to be normal but Extremis didn’t work for him. Tony agrees to help realizing that this could help sell his product.

The issue closes with Matt visiting Foggy. The excitement Matt feel after seeing Foggy’s face is short-lived as his vision slowly fades into blackness.

Final Thoughts

This issue shed a little more light on how Tony’s personality has changes since the events of AXIS. It will be interesting to see how Daredevil reacts to losing his vision in the next issue.  Even though he was only able to see for a short period of time, we will have to wait and see if he has the willpower to resist the addiction of the drug-like Extremis. I think the next issue will elaborate on Pepper’s contingency plan — maybe she has a plan to bring back the old Tony. Until then, Daredevil is left with the decision to live life without sight.
