Is Gemma Atkinson Going To Be CBS’ Supergirl?
By Nick Tylwalk
According to The Sun, the best-selling UK tabloid, that could indeed be the case. The paper ran a story on New Year’s Eve claiming that Gemma Atkinson was “waiting to hear whether she has been cast as the lead.” The same story also says that the upcoming CBS show will be “based on the 1984 film,” which as far as we know is only true in the sense that they both feature Supergirl.

So who is Atkinson? She’s a British actress who has appeared mostly on TV and in movies in the UK. Her longest recurring role was in Hollyoaks and it’s spin-offs, where she played Lisa Hunter. She supposedly also dated soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo at one point, and she’s done some modeling as well.
One interesting point is that she’s 30 years old, and while actresses play roles that are younger or older than their true ages all the time, it would surprise me a bit if the producers of Supergirl didn’t opt for someone younger as Kara Zor-El is supposed to be 24 in the series. Not promoting ageism here, by any means, simply commenting on how these things often work.
Props to The Sun for showing “how Gemma Atkinson might look as Supergirl,” by which the paper meant simply superimposing her face over a shot of Helen Slater from the movie. We’ll see soon if she actually lands the role, as Supergirl, or whatever it ends up being called, is currently in development.
