Bruno Heller mentioned that Jada Pinkett Smith, who plays mob boss Fish Mooney, was so good they ended up using her a lot more than they had originally planned.

"She just brought so much energy and ferocity that she made it her own and created the kind of female character of which there’s not many on the screen. We’ve relied on Jada more than the initial plan was."

Heller also said similar things about child stars Camren Bicondova, who plays Selina Kyle, and David Mazouz, who plays Bruce Wayne.

"With both of those two it’s just been a joy to see real, natural, great acting, and so we’ve used both of those guys more than we would have done otherwise."

Bruno Heller also said it was probable that they would create more original characters, so you won’t only be seeing characters already known from the Batman universe. He also promised that in the second half of Gotham’s first season, we would see more of Alfred’s parenting style, and a whole other side of Edward Nygma, the future Riddler.
