Gotham, which returns this Monday on Fox, was one of the Fall’s hottest new shows, One huge reason for that has been the performance of Robin Lord Taylor. Robin Lord Taylor plays a young and ambitious Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin, who is making moves to rise to the top of the criminal underworld in Gotham. Robin Lord Taylor recently talked with both Newsday & The Los Angeles Times and we have some excerpts from both interviews for you.

On if Taylor was intimidated by past Penguins Danny Devito & Burgess Meredith:

"Absolutely. I don’t think I could be human and not be intimidated to follow in the footsteps of Burgess and Danny. They are iconic actors, and their portrayals were iconic. I grew up watching both of them. It was daunting, but when I ultimately got to read the script, I saw it was a unique take on the character and illuminated parts of the character that hadn’t been illuminated in previous incarnations. The pressure was lessened because I know I could make my own choices and make the character my own."

Does Robin Lord Taylor consider the Penguin a psychopath?

"I see that in everything he does there is a distinct motivation, and that is grounded in self-preservation. The choices he makes are very deliberate. I sympathize with him. I don’t think you can sympathize with a psychopath. I see him involved in a dark world that has forced him to make dark choices."
