Emerald City Comicon Now Under The ReedPOP Umbrella
By Nick Tylwalk
The Emerald City Comicon isn’t new. It first hit Seattle in 2003, and has grown to be the premier show of its kind in the Pacific Northwest.
What is new is its alliance with ReedPOP, which was announced today. The press release was a little confusing in that it made reference to “next year’s show,” but since it referenced March 27-29, which are the dates for this year’s event, I took it to mean it’s going into effect for the 2015 edition.
ReedPOP is the producer of several similar conventions, including New York Comic Con and the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo. The company also helps corporate partners put on events like the Star Wars Celebration, UFC Fan Expo and the various PAX gaming shows.
Founder Jim Demonakos described the Emerald City Comicon’s alliance with ReedPop this way on the convention’s website:
"A classic superhero team-up is what we have here, and we even skipped the messy misunderstanding and battle scene that usually comes before a team-up!Moving forward ECCC will still be produced by the same people who have made this show great, but with the added benefit of having a ton of rad people from ReedPop helping out to make it even more awesome. The Emerald City Comicon team will also start working on ReedPop’s events to help make them bigger and better. It’s win-win!"
ReedPOP also sounds pretty excited having ECCC in its portfolio of shows.
“The addition of ECCC to the ReedPOP family is a huge win and we couldn’t be more excited to see how we can make each other better,” Lance Fensterman, ReedPOP’s Global Senior Vice President, said in a press release. “The ECCC team is tremendous and have put together an amazing show. I know there are things we can introduce to the mix and look even more forward to what the ECCC team can bring to all our events around the globe.”
I’ve only personally attended one ReedPOP production, which was this past year’s New York Comicon, and I found it to be incredibly well-organized given the insane number of attendees. I can’t help but think this makes sense for both parties, particularly if ECCC is going to continue to grow.
