Breaking! Suicide Squad’s First Casualty: Tom Hardy
By Skip Harvey
The first fatality from the upcoming ‘Suicide Squad’ has already hit the floor. Badass actor Tom Hardy has dropped out of the film due to a scheduling conflict with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s The Revenant.
Without skipping a beat, WB instantly offered the role of Rick Flagg to Jake Gyllenhaal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This means that they likely had a shortlist and simply crossed off the top name.
I think this is a sad development because Hardy would have brought an intimidating toughness to the role that I simply don’t see from Gyllenhaal. I mean, could you have seen him play Bane? Have you seen Bronson? I just don’t see it.
Suicide Squad is directed by David Ayer and on track to begin shooting in April. It stars the likes of Will Smith, Jered Leto, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne.
The ensemble piece is trying to duplicate the c-listers-as-daring-experiment formula that Guardians of the Galaxy knocked out of the park. Unfortunately it will be without Tom Hardy.
