Sign The Petition To Ask White House For Flash Appreciation Day
By Nick Tylwalk
Yes, there’s a petition out there right now on petitions.whitehouse.gov asking for the President of the United States to declare February 11 “Flash Appreciation Day.” The reason is that this is the 75th anniversary of the first appearance of the character in Flash Comics #1. That was Jay Garrick, not Barry Allen, so presumably this is to recognize the “positive inspiration to his many fans for the past 75 years” for all of the men and women to suit up as the Flash.
Why February 11? Flash Comics #1 came out in January of 1940, so a day this month would have been even more ideal. But CBR’s Robot 6 says that some fans already celebrate that day thanks to an episode of Justice League Unlimited that aired on February 11 in 2006 and dealt with a fictional Flash Appreciation Day (albeit one ruined by the Rogues, of course).
The people at Nothing But Comics who started the petition do note that President Obama has more important things to deal with, but also correctly state that honoring the petition would take hardly any of his time and cost taxpayers nothing. Come to think of it, Flash Appreciation Day might actually pump a little more money into the economy if people honor it by buying some Flash comics, t-shirts or toys. Come on government, this is something that politicians on both sides of the aisle can get behind!
The problem might be getting to the 100,000 signatures needed for the White House to address the petition. As I type this, it’s at 379, and it needs to hit its goal by February 10. So if you get behind honoring the Fastest Man Alive, you need to spread the word — fast.
