Fox has seen enough of the pre-Batman days of Gotham City that it wants to see them continue.

IGN is reporting that Fox has renewed Gotham for Season 2 next fall, along with Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Empire. Though it’s fair to say Gotham doesn’t have spectacular ratings, it was the most-watched scripted Fox show this season until Empire debuted, currently averaging 6.65 million viewers an episode and a 2.91 rating in the 18-49 demo. On the network it’s on, those numbers aren’t bad.

The reaction of comic fans to the show has been mixed, but Fox seems pleased with the series, as IGN says the network’s only advice to the showrunners was to “keep doing what you’re doing.” Execs also seem pretty excited about Season 1 episodes we haven’t seen yet:

"We’ve just seen episode 14. And it just keeps getting better."

Creatively, the Gotham team has jammed a lot of familiar characters into the first half of its debut season, but there are certainly bullets left in the clip. The biggest one is the Joker, who hasn’t made an appearance yet. Batman also has one of the larger rosters of foes of any super hero around, so there’s almost no limit to the origin stories the series can tell going forward. And each successive season gets Bruce Wayne closer to his famous alter ego, naturally.

Gotham has another new episode titled “What the Little Bird Told Him,” which introduces the Electrocutioner, coming up Monday at 9.
