Fox entertainment chairman Gary Newman told TV Insider that the network is negotiating to bring a live-action X-Men series to television. The negotiating in question is with Marvel, because while Fox controls the movie rights to the X-Men and all associated characters, TV isn’t the same thing as film.
Seeing as how Marvel has been less than cooperative about promoting the X-Men and Fantastic Four (another franchise for which Fox owns the movie rights), the easy assumption would be that Marvel would prefer this didn’t happen. But since this would be a whole new agreement, it’s conceivable that the two companies could find a way to make it more beneficial for both sides.
With that in mind, Newman said any show wouldn’t make it to the air this fall.
"It’s in negotiations. We’re cautiously optimistic, we had a good meeting with them. That will not be on a fast track creatively. This is just the deal, now we have to find the creative."
The next obvious question would be whether any X-Men series would tie into the movies, which recently cast new actors and actresses in the parts of Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm, or whether it would exist in its own, separate continuity. It would also be intriguing to see if Fox would stack Monday nights with the X-Men to make it a can’t-miss night for comic fans alongside Gotham, though the TV Insider report also hints that the network is hoping the TV version of Minority Report can make a companion to the early days of Batman’s villains and supporting cast.
What say you, X-Men fans? Would you be excited to see a live-action show, especially if it’s with Marvel’s new and improved blessing? Drop a comment below and let us know.
