Marvel Lands David Tennant For Role On A.K.A. Jessica Jones
By Nick Tylwalk
Marvel super heroes vs. Doctor Who? Not quite, but having David Tennant on one of the company’s Netflix shows is kind of the next best thing.

And it’s happening. Marvel announced today that Tennant was joining the cast of A.K.A. Jessica Jones, which will be the second super hero series to hit Netflix following Daredevil. Tennant will be playing Kilgrave, who the announcement described as an “enigmatic figure from Jessica’s past” whose return “will send shockwaves through the former super hero’s world.”
We’ll go even further with our explanation. In the comics, Kilgrave is Zebediah Killgrave (not sure why the name is spelled differently, but hey), better known as the Purple Man. His powerful ability to control the minds of other people through verbal suggestions has made him a handful for any number of super heroes, but he has a special history with Jones. While she was the super hero Jewel, she fell under the Purple Man’s control for several months, during which time she was subjected to psychological torture. The Avengers actually had to defeat her in battle to get her on the road to recovery.
The guess here is that Tennant’s Kilgrave will not be purple but will retain his powers of persuasion and his back story with Jones. As for the actor himself, the Scotsman is famous for playing the Tenth Doctor on Doctor Who, and is currently getting rave reviews for his portrayal of Alec Hardy on the British crime drama Broadchurch. His casting follows that of Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin on Daredevil, giving Marvel two heavyweights as the villains in its series.
No premiere date has been announced yet for A.K.A. Jessica Jones, which stars Krysten Ritter as the title character and Mike Colter as Luke Cage, though Marvel has reaffirmed that we’ll be seeing it in 2015.
