Arrow Season 3, Episode 11 Synopsis: Midnight City

It’s come to my attention that Laurel Lance is not the most popular character for a vocal part of Arrow fandom. With that in mind, those folks may not be crazy about the next few episodes, which seem to be pretty Laurel-heavy.

Take this week’s episode, “Midnight City.” With Oliver Queen presumed dead by Team Arrow and Felicity Smoak seemingly walking away, Starling City is on the precipice of taking a big step back — especially with Brick consolidating his power. Arsenal and John Diggle appear determined to keep fighting the good fight, and they might not have any choice but to accept Laurel’s help, even though she’s only just spreading her wings as Black Canary.

Here’s how the official synopsis from The CW describes what we’ll see:

"Arsenal (Colton Haynes) and Diggle (David Ramsey) confront Laurel (Katie Cassidy) about trying to step into her sister’s shoes and warn her to stop before she gets herself killed. However, when Brick (guest star Vinnie Jones) kidnaps the city’s Aldermen and threatens to kill them all unless the police evacuate The Glades, it’s all suits on deck.Meanwhile, Ray (Brandon Routh) steps in to help Lance (Paul Blackthorne) and the police force fight Brick, showing Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) a new side of her boss. Malcom (John Barrowman) tells Thea (Willa Holland) that Ra’s al Ghul (Matt Nable) is after him and his family and they must leave town immediately."

It’s easy to make jokes about Arrow without the Arrow, but I dig this current mini-arc as a way to throw the supporting characters into the fire and test their mettle. If Arsenal and Black Canary turn out to have even a semi-effective partnership, it could change the dynamic of Team Arrow quite a bit when Oliver makes his inevitable return.

I’m also curious to see what they mean about Ray Palmer stepping up. Presumably he hasn’t quite got his ATOM suit working yet, though it would be awesome if he did. We probably won’t see him as a full-fledged super hero until the end of the season, but he’s been a worthwhile addition to the cast already.

“Midnight City” airs Wednesday at 8 pm on The CW, and we’ll be shooting to have our recap and review up quicker than Arsenal can notch an arrow. We’re also more than happy to point you in the direction of the Arrow After Show from theStream.tv, where the hosts will break down all of this week’s developments.
