See The First Fantastic Four Trailer And Its Sci-Fi Spin

Thank goodness for movies that open first overseas! Because Kingsman: The Secret Service (itself a comic book movie, if you want to get technical) has already premiered in the UK, 20th Century Fox UK has already given the world a look at the first trailer from the upcoming reboot of Fantastic Four.

And well … it’s different. That’s probably a good thing given the lukewarm reaction to the last two Fantastic Four movies, which gave us pretty good casting but a weird take on Doctor Doom and an unseen Galactus. This time out, Fantastic Four is said to take more inspiration from the Ultimate Universe take on Marvel’s first family of super heroes.

That definitely shows in the trailer, which focuses on mankind’s need “to discover … to invent.” There’s a very obvious science fiction element to what follows, and the transformation of the four main characters into something beyond normal understanding is front and center in the rest of the trailer. That change is as ominous as it is something to celebrate, which is obvious from the “be ready for what’s coming” bit toward the end.

I’m not a member of the Josh Trank bandwagon, as I found the lone work by which we can really judge the Fantastic Four director, his found footage super hero movie Chronicle, decidedly underwhelming. I also have some trepidation about other rumored aspects of the script, like the idea that Doom might be turned into an angry blogger.

That said, Trank has at least succeeded in making this initial trailer an obvious break and modernization of what we’ve seen before. I just wonder if that will be enough for the movie to succeed, given that it will likely alienate some comics fans and have to stand on its own merits to draw in a wider audience.

Maybe subsequent trailers will tell us a bit more about its prospects. Fantastic Four, starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell, opens in the US on August 7, 2015.
