CBS’s Supergirl Finds Its Jimmy Olsen
By Steve Lam
Via The Hollywood Reporter, Mehcad Brooks has been cast as famous photographer Jimmy Olsen in the upcoming CBS Supergirl series. This casting follows the news of Melissa Benoist winning the role of Kara Zor-El / Supergirl.
Mehcad Brooks started his career as a Calvin Klein model and quickly moved into acting. In 2003, Brooks played Russell Clark on Fox’s Boston Public. From 2005 to 2006, he played Matthew Applewhite on ABC’s Desperate Housewives. From 2008 to 2010, he played Benedict “Eggs” Talley on HBO’s True Blood. His later more notable television roles included Dollhouse, My Generation, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Alcatraz. Brooks’s film credits include Glory Road (2006), In the Valley of Elah (2007), Just Wright (2010), Creature (2011), and About Last Night (2014).
Being one of the most famous comic book characters ever created, James Bartholomew “Jimmy” Olsen really needs no introduction. Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and first appearing in Action Comics #6, Jimmy Olsen would later become synonymous with the Superman mythos. CBS’s Supergirl series will have a new take on the character:
"Olsen, in the CBS take, is a photographer at CatCo., where Kara works. He’s the salt of the earth and this only makes Kara crush on him even more. The character has recently been living and working in National City though the reason is still a secret. As Kara emerges as Supergirl they grow closer."
Being cast in this role, Mehcad Brooks will be joining the ranks of various actors who have portrayed Jimmy Olsen in live-action.
CBS’s new Supergirl series is from executive producer Greg Berlanti — the man behind The CW’s Arrow and The Flash. The premise for the show will center around Kara Zor-El embracing her newly discovered powers:
"The hourlong drama, which received a hefty series commitment, centers on Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. Benoist will play Kara, who after arriving on Earth was taken in by a foster family, the Danvers, who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers (which she shares with her famous cousin, Superman). Now 24, Kara feels un-empowered, a slave to having repressed her innate abilities. She’s still pretty, but with her face hidden behind glasses and her hair pulled back, she doesn’t know it herself. An unexpected disaster forces her to use her powers in public. Energized by her heroic deed, for the first time in her life, Kara begins embracing her extraordinary abilities. She begins helping the people of her city and they soon take notice — and she’s even given a new moniker: Supergirl."
There is no set date for the premiere of Supergirl.
