The LEGO SHIELD Helicarrier Set Is Amazing (And Yes, Expensive)

Sometimes, the people with licenses to make super hero toys do such a good job that you’re actually angry at them. It’s because the stuff they come up with is so cool, you know you’re going to want to spend money on it even though you probably shouldn’t.

Case in point: the LEGO SHIELD Helicarrier, which was unveiled exclusively today by the Wall Street Journal. This mammoth set contains nearly 3,000 pieces and comes with 12 LEGO microfigures — because a Helicarrier doesn’t fly itself, and often runs into trouble even when it’s fully staffed! You’ll also get five minifigures with it, including Maria Hill, who’s new to the LEGO universe.

Also in the set are a number of microscale vehicles like Quinjets, regular jets and support trucks. When fully assembled (sorry …), the LEGO Shield Helicarrier is almost a foot tall, 31 inches long and 17 inches wide. In other words, it would take almost all of the available floor space in my son’s bedroom.

This amount of awesomeness doesn’t come cheap, though. The set will retail for … wait for it … $349.99 when it goes on sale in March. And before you say anything, no, it doesn’t mean we’ll be seeing a Helicarrier in Avengers: Age of Ultron, because the WSJ says the set isn’t branded with the movie. The timing probably isn’t coincidental, however.

An official unveiling will take place at the North American International Toy Fair next month in New York City, so if you happen to be there, you’ll probably want to keep your eyes peeled for this one so you can gawk at it in person.
