Marvel, Funko Team For Marvel Collector Corps Subscription Service
By Nick Tylwalk
Pretty much everyone I know who subscribes to Loot Crate really likes it, which always led me to wonder when or if one of the big comic book publishers might cut out the middle man and try their own subscription service to bring collectibles, apparel and other goodies right to fans’ doors.
As it turns out, Marvel was already ahead of me on that one, and it’s enlisted one of the hotter partners around to help out. Marvel announced today that in conjunction with Funko, the Marvel Collector Corps is now a thing. This new subscription service will deliver $50 worth of value for $25 every two months (as opposed to Loot Crate, which is monthly), with the first box shipping in April and themed for Avengers: Age of Ultron.
That first box will feature an exclusive 6″ Hulkbuster Iron Man POP! vinyl figure, one additional vinyl figure, an exclusive t-shirt and two “premium accessories.” The June box will have an Ant-Man theme, which makes sense with his movie hitting in July.
In addition to regular subscriptions, there’s also a Founders Program. Should you take that route, you commit to a full year of the service (six boxes, for those who don’t want to do the math), and you’ll receive a free 8″ Founders Figure statue on the anniversary of your sign-up date — it looks like the first one is Captain America. As long as you continue to subscribe with no breaks, you’ll get another statue each year.
It’s certainly an interesting concept, and the timing for it seems to be right, both in terms of the popularity of similar programs, the ubiquitousness of POP! vinyl figures and the fact that Marvel has two movies to promote this year and even more in subsequent years. The bi-monthly nature might also mean people who already subscribe to Loot Crate or Comic Bento can find more room in their budget to squeeze this one in too.
